Bodysuit vs Leotard: What Actually Changes in the Factory

Bodysuit Series·Manufacturing guide

The bodysuit and the leotard look similar enough that the terms sometimes get used interchangeably — but from a manufacturing standpoint, one specific construction detail separates them, and it's not the fabric.

Same factory, same fabric system. Different crotch construction.

The actual difference

A bodysuit has a snap-close crotch gusset, allowing bathroom access without removing the garment — designed for everyday jersey wear. A leotard has a fixed crotch with no snap, built for dance, gymnastics, or stage use in performance lycra or jersey, where a snap closure would be a liability under athletic movement.

Why the bodysuit exists as a separate category

The bodysuit's lineage runs directly through the leotard — Donna Karan adapted the leotard's construction logic for everyday fashion in her 1984 Seven Easy Pieces collection, adding the snap closure that made all-day wear practical. The functional problem it solves is specific: a shirt tucked into high-waisted bottoms untucks with movement. The bodysuit's snap gusset eliminates that gap permanently.

The takeaway

If you're briefing a factory on either garment, the fabric and general construction conversation is identical — the entire spec conversation that differs is the crotch closure. Get that one detail right and you've specified the correct garment.
