Cotton as Resistance

Article 01f·2 min

In 1921, Gandhi organized the public burning of 150,000 pieces of British-made cloth in Mumbai — a protest built entirely around a fiber.

1905–1908

The First Swadeshi Movement

The Swadeshi movement launched in 1905, partly in response to the Partition of Bengal, calling for a boycott of British goods — specifically "Manchester cotton". Despite strong early momentum, it had spent itself by 1908 with limited real impact on British imports.

1918–1931

Gandhi Takes Up the Charkha

From 1918, Gandhi made hand-spinning — the charkha — central to his strategy: if every Indian spun for just one hour a day, he argued, it could break the country's dependence on British textiles. On 31 July 1921, at the Elphinstone Mill compound in Parel, Mumbai, Gandhi led the public burning of 150,000 pieces of foreign cloth. He wore only hand-spun khadi for the rest of his life, and the spinning wheel was later placed on the Indian National Congress flag in 1931.

A Visit to Lancashire

In September 1931, Gandhi visited a textile mill in Darwen, East Lancashire — meeting the very mill workers whose jobs had been hit hard by the Swadeshi boycotts. It's a direct echo of the earlier chapters of this story: the same Lancashire cotton trade built on empire and raw cotton from India and the American South was now losing ground to a resistance movement built around the fiber itself.
