Where Cotton Began

Article 01a·Origin Story·2 min

The oldest cotton fibers on Earth were found bonded to copper beads in a village called Mehrgarh — 7,000 years before anyone owned a t-shirt.

~5000 BCE

A Village Called Mehrgarh

The earliest confirmed evidence of cotton use anywhere in the world comes from Mehrgarh, in modern Balochistan, Pakistan — fiber impressions preserved on copper beads, dated to roughly 5000 BCE. Long before Egypt built its pyramids, this settlement had already discovered how to turn a plant fiber into thread.

The Indus Valley Perfects the Craft

By the height of the Indus Valley Civilization, cities like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa had a complete cotton supply chain: cultivation, spinning, weaving, dyeing. Archaeologists recovered actual woven cotton textile fragments at Mohenjo-daro dating to roughly 3250–2750 BCE — among the oldest woven cotton cloth ever found. Centuries later, the Rigveda (c. 1500 BCE) uses the Sanskrit word "karpasa" for cotton, proof of how embedded it already was in daily life.

An Ocean Away, the Same Idea

Cotton wasn't invented once. On the other side of the planet, with zero contact between the two civilizations, cotton was independently domesticated at Huaca Prieta, Peru, around 6000 BCE — a different species entirely (Gossypium barbadense, versus the Indus Valley's Gossypium arboreum). Two unconnected civilizations arrived at the same fiber.
