A hemispherical body with smoothly sloped sides rises from a narrow, flat foot to a wide circular rim. The single-piece form is broad and shallow relative to its height, with a cream glaze coating the interior and exterior. The rim is slightly rounded, and the footed base sits flush beneath the curved bowl.

Bone china, translucent, glowing white porcelain that's still considered the top grade of English dinnerware, gets its name and its strength from an ingredient that sounds more like a butcher's byproduct than a luxury material: actual bone ash, mixed into the clay body by Josiah Spode in the late 18th century specifically to solve a durability problem regular porcelain couldn't.
The formula worked so well it's barely changed since.
