A broad, circular plate with a low profile and a wide, flat central well. The rim rises only slightly from the well, creating a shallow, gently curved lip that ends in a thin edge. The plate is wider than it is tall, with a smooth, continuous circumference.

Bone china, translucent, glowing white porcelain that's still considered the top grade of English dinnerware, gets its name and its strength from an ingredient that sounds more like a butcher's byproduct than a luxury material: actual bone ash, mixed into the clay body by Josiah Spode in the late 18th century specifically to solve a durability problem regular porcelain couldn't.
The formula worked so well it's barely changed since.
