The bag forms a structured teardrop with a rounded lower edge that tapers to a narrow point at one end, giving it an asymmetrical outline. A diagonal seam divides the front into two panels, while a continuous gusset runs around the curved base. The nylon coil zipper follows the top curve, and the webbing strap attaches at the tapered end and the rounded side.

Goyard has a waitlist for a $3,500 canvas duffel bag.

The same canvas as their totes. The same construction. The same factory in Paris. Meanwhile, Nike sells 2 million duffel bags a year at $50 each. Both are cylindrical shells with a horseshoe zip and a grab handle. The difference between the $50 Nike and the $3,500 Goyard is not the engineering. It is the material, the edge finishing, and whether or not your name starts with a G. The duffel bag is one of those products where the construction is completely commoditised and the margin is entirely in the brand. Which means: if you get the construction right, the commercial ceiling is wherever you decide to put it.

The Sports Bag -- "The Construction is Commoditised. The Margin is Wherever You Decide to Put It."

The duffel bag takes its name from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the thick woollen cloth used for early military kit bags was produced. The barrel-shaped, top-loading bag was a military standard throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, carried by sailors and soldiers whose kit needed to be packed and unpacked rapidly from a single compartment. The civilian version, in canvas and later nylon, became a standard gym and travel bag in the post-war period.

The sports use case introduced the wet/dry compartment -- a separate, often ventilated or waterproof-lined section for wet swimwear, sweaty gym kit, or muddy boots that needs to be isolated from clean and dry contents. This specification separates a sports bag from a fashion holdall at the brief stage. A fashion duffel for weekend travel does not need a wet/dry compartment. A gym bag for daily sports use does.

The luxury duffel market is small but commercially significant: Goyard, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry, and Globe-Trotter all produce structured travel holdalls at $1,000-3,500. The construction is similar to a premium nylon sports bag -- the material (Goyard canvas, LV monogram coated canvas, Mulberry leather) and the finishing (hand-painted edges, solid brass hardware, monogramming) are the entire price justification.
