The sock is cut low so the opening sits below the ankle, with a shallow foot-hugging body that ends at the ball of the foot. A wide U-shaped opening runs from the toe to the heel, bordered by a narrow elasticated binding. The toe is rounded and closed, and the heel is shallow with a curved edge.

In 1589, an English curate named William Lee built a machine that could knit a stocking in a fraction of the time it took by hand, and brought it to Queen Elizabeth I hoping for a patent.
She refused him — reportedly because the machine only worked in coarse wool and she wanted her stockings in silk — and Lee died in France still chasing a patent that never came. His stocking frame became the direct ancestor of the circular knitting machine that still produces nearly every sock made today, patent or no patent.

Knitted hosiery generally falls under HS 6115, with subheadings splitting by fiber content (cotton, synthetic, wool) and by whether the item is graduated compression hosiery. Confirm the specific subheading per fiber blend, since duty rates vary by material.
