Each piece is a flat, rectangular towel with straight hemmed edges and a woven dobby border inset from the short ends. The set stacks in two groups: three larger towels and three smaller towels, all folded into thick, even layers. The terry cloth body is plush and cream-coloured, with the border running across the width near each short edge.

For centuries, Ottoman bathhouses dried visitors with peştemal — thin, flat-woven cotton towels that packed flat and dried fast.

Terry cloth, the thick plush fabric now folded on hotel bathroom shelves, is a 19th-century English industrial answer to the same problem: a power loom that could weave uncut loops into the fabric surface, multiplying the surface area available to absorb water. The trade-off between the two towels, speed versus absorbency, still defines how a hospitality towel program gets specified today.

The story of the Coordinated Towel Set

For centuries, Ottoman bathhouses dried visitors with peştemal — thin, flat-woven cotton towels that packed flat and dried fast. Terry cloth, the thick plush fabric now folded on hotel bathroom shelves, is a 19th-century English industrial answer to the same problem: a power loom that could weave uncut loops into the fabric surface, multiplying the surface area available to absorb water. The trade-off between the two towels, speed versus absorbency, still defines how a hospitality towel program gets specified today.

Combed vs. cardedCotton gradeCombed cotton removes short fibers for a smoother, longer-lasting towel; carded is the cheaper standard grade

The Loom That Multiplied Surface Area

Terry's raised, uncut loops trap far more water per square inch than a flat weave, at the cost of bulk and slower drying.

GSM (grams per square meter) is the primary towel spec: 300–400 GSM signals a quick-dry, lightweight towel, while 600–900 GSM signals the thick, plush towel associated with luxury hotels.

Combed cotton has its shortest fibers removed before spinning, producing a smoother, more durable, less lint-shedding towel; carded cotton skips that step and is the cheaper, more common grade at lower price points.

Coordinated towel sets require matching sizing standards across hand towels, bath towels, and washcloths, plus dye-lot matching so all pieces in a set are visually identical rather than subtly different shades.

Questions

300–400 GSM for a quick-dry, lightweight towel; 500–600 GSM for a standard hotel bath towel; 700–900 GSM for a premium, plush guest towel. State the GSM explicitly — "hotel towel" alone doesn't specify weight.
